Nuclear Energy is the answer by a country mile.
We want energy and lots of it. More energy means cheaper energy (law of Supply & Demand).
A nuclear physicist friend of mine, who used to work in nuclear fusion research until Bill Clinton shut it all down, explained to me that nuclear fission reactors are very safe. If you think what I am saying is a crock, run down the stats. How many die from coal, oil, solar, wind. You'll be shocked for example, how, per kilowatt hour, wind is much more dangerous to human life than nuclear.
Chernobyl is the ONLY major powerplant disaster that could be considered a bonafide disaster. The Chernoble Reactor wasn't built for safety, and nuclear power does deserve SOME respect... Research the deaths from any other nuclear powerplant "disaster" and you'll understand. They're more than safe. And you might be surprised if you look up how many people die each year from wind power accidents. We really should be comparing these things instead of reacting in an immature emotional fashion to the potentials of splitting the atom. Research nuclear waste transport and storage also. Don't be afraid to get the answers for yourself but don't be foolish and look only at opinions coming from pro-green agenda sites. Those are all politics with perhaps a quote from a scientist thrown in here and there. What you want is serious information from a bevy of nuclear scientists. Get that.
Nuclear not only is many times cheaper than wind power, it is many times safer as well! DO YOUR RESEARCH and GET THE STATS. Don't trust those aiming at your emotions rather than your reason and common sense. Don't ignore emotions, but do get the facts if you have to look hard and long to get past the hype of the green movement. Those who have a green agenda do NOT want you to compare safety stats.
Oh, and lets restart Nuclear FUSION research. Right now, we are sitting on our hands as if we had laurels to fall back on. We should never think that way.
Cheap, efficient, plentiful ENERGY makes all our innovations work FOR us. Imagine rechargeable electric cars costing pennies per mile because of advancements in battery technology (big things are truly well on the way) coupled with cheap and plentiful electricity to make it all work. Heck, I'll get an electric car then!!!
